On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the West Michigan Whitecaps are teaming up with The Delta Project for Black Sox Appreciation Night at LMCU Ballpark — a powerful evening dedicated to honoring Black baseball pioneers while uplifting local youth.
Honoring West Michigan's Black Baseball Heritage
The game will pay tribute to the legendary Grand Rapids Black Sox, a team originally owned by community leader Ted Rasberry, who made history by launching the city’s first racially integrated little league in 1965. Players like Johnnie Walker, Dan Groce, and Minnie Forbes represent a legacy of talent and resilience, navigating discrimination both on and off the field.
This celebration isn’t just about the past — it’s about continuing the legacy of equity and empowerment in Grand Rapids.
A Night That Gives Back
In partnership with The Delta Project, a local non-profit empowering youth of color and young fathers, the night will raise funds for programs designed to keep young people out of the juvenile justice system and connected to their community through mentorship, coaching, and storytelling.
